Speaking and Spelling: Two Different Beasts

There is a great deal of overlap between speaking and spelling in the English writing system, which is why phonics is such an effective approach to teaching early literacy. However, if we truly spelled words the way we said them, then we’d have a real mess. Spelling is a system that consists of rules, pressures, influences and behaviours that are different from speaking. Conflating speaking and spelling beyond basic phoneme-grapheme correspondences is a concerning trend in education. In this presentation, Lyn Stone shows the points of divergence between the two systems and offers better questions than “How do I map/code this word?”

Presenter: Dr. Maura Malone

Dr. Maura Malone is a certified dyslexia tutor as well as a coach to individuals with ADHD, a frequently concomitant condition. She is certified for dyslexia training through the Barton reading and spelling curriculum and has completed multiple trainings in Structured Word Inquiry. Dr. Malone uses the Seeing My Time program to help improve the lives of those with ADHD. She has helped dozens of children and young adults overcome their reading, inattention, and impulsivity challenges. In addition to tutoring and coaching, she is a regular speaker to schools, parent groups and other organizations and also leads workshops with small groups. She earned her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Virginia and has an undergraduate degree in Linguistics and Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts. Her proudest achievement is raising three dyslexic boys.
